"Student Trustee Joins Board, Sophomore Wins $40K Scholarship!"

Kaskaskia College Board of Trustees recently bid farewell to Connor Wademan, their outgoing student trustee, and welcomed Meagan Mahlandt as the new student trustee for the upcoming academic year. During a meeting chaired by Bill Hawley, a special proclamation was read to acknowledge Wademan's pivotal role on the board throughout the past year.

Wademan, a Carlyle High School graduate, impressed the Board and College President George Evans with his professionalism and dedication to understanding the intricacies of the college's operations. His commitment to learning and representing the student body was commendable. Wademan now sets his sights on Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he plans to pursue a major in biology with a medical science concentration, aiming for a career in dentistry at the Alton School of Dental.

In contrast, Meagan Mahlandt, a Centralia High School alumna, steps into the role of student trustee with enthusiasm. Reflecting on a positive experience at a Student Advisory Committee meeting, Mahlandt expressed her desire to contribute to the enhancement of community colleges' policies. Engaged in Student Congress and the Engineering Club, she is currently pursuing an associate's degree in engineering science at Kaskaskia College. Mahlandt aspires to continue her education at SIU Edwardsville to obtain a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.

In another educational success story, Melody Watson, a sophomore at Hawthorne Middle/High School in Florida, was pleasantly surprised during a school assembly with a $40,000 scholarship from the College Board's BigFuture program. Watson, who aims to become a nurse, is utilizing resources such as advanced courses and the TRIO Educational Talent Search program to achieve her academic goals.

The scholarship selection process by the College Board highlights students who are proactive in planning for higher education and careers. By offering these scholarships, the organization aims to alleviate financial concerns for students like Watson, allowing them to focus on their academic aspirations. Watson's dedication and commitment to her studies have garnered praise from her school principal and TRIO program coordinator, who commend her exemplary work ethic and optimism towards her future.

Watson's scholarship win not only brought joy to her and her family but also serves as an inspiration to fellow students. Her achievement underscores the importance of seizing opportunities and pursuing one's dreams despite obstacles. The support network provided by educational programs like TRIO plays a crucial role in guiding students towards success and empowering them to aim high.

Through these stories of academic achievement and recognition, we are reminded of the impact of dedication, support systems, and opportunities in shaping the educational journeys of talented individuals. As these students embark on their academic and professional pursuits, their stories serve as a beacon of inspiration for others to aim high, persevere, and strive for excellence in their educational endeavors.
